Week One February 29:
Into to Traditional Encaustics – Fusing, Layering and Scraping
This is an introductory class for those who have never used wax as a medium before or have just started out and are interested in learning the basics of the ancient art of encaustic painting. We will review safety issues, surfaces, types of encaustic mediums, layering techniques and fusing with a torch. We will also discuss historical uses and contemporary uses of wax as a medium.
Optional: studio time for Intermediate and advanced encaustic artists. Bring your projects in for help or just explore your own creative ideas in a fully ventilated and well out-fitted studio for encaustics. Learn new cutting edge techniques in wax and further your body of work through interaction with other working artists.
Week Two March 14:
Intro into Photo Encaustic
This workshop will focus on the theory and practice of the fusion of photographic processes with the encaustic medium. Participants will learn how to integrate a photographic image with encaustic through techniques such as layering, painting, and by making the original imagery translucent. We will also demonstrate how to experiment with various methods of manipulating the original photograph-including toning, distressing, and a variety of transfer techniques.
We will cover archival techniques, methods of presentation, step-by-step instruction and time to experiment, create, and critique work
Optional: Intermediate and advanced encaustic artists may use this class as independent studio time for their own personal encaustic projects.
Week Three March 28:
Encaustic Experimental – Intro into Collage and Paper with Encaustic
You will be introduced to the basics of encaustic on paper. We will explore works on paper including creating one of a kind prints and layering with pigmented beeswax. We will also explore the natural translucency that occurs with the saturation of the beeswax into the paper.
Develop techniques working with heat and the relationship to surface and texture and make a series of related pieces. We will also discuss works on paper involving large scale printing and photography.
Week Four April 11:
Accretion and Pouring
This is a more advanced class or for those interested in non-traditional encaustic and wax as a medium. We will introduce building techniques, sculptural options and work with you on your specific project. We will also demonstrate the fine art of pouring hot wax to create a one of a kind surface that only wax can provide. There will also be additional critique time available from Michael David at this session to help guide you in your next steps in painting.
A supply list will be provided in advance. The evenings will be run by Rae Broyles and Penny Treese.
